It's perhaps a slightly strange idea for a post. I suffer from a bit of podophobia and I thought getting behind the camera to look at my feet might help a bit. Click away now if you also detest feet.
I've always hated my feet: they're rough from being barefoot for my entire childhood, and battered and misshapen from a ceased but extensive career with dancing. Graduating to pointe shoes did not help: as well as building blister upon blister on my toes, pointework gave me crippling cramp in my arches. I still feel sick when I think about the muscle there, and I cannot let anyone (including myself) touch it. The emotion was wrapped up with the realisation that I would never be a 'dancer' proper (I suppose a Classics degree at Cambridge wasn't a bad plan B), and as a result I have since felt hatred towards the foot and all feet generally.
Rehearsing for the show this term , I was forced to reawaken my retired dance shoes and reacquaint myself with my feet (couldn't avoid massaging them after class for fear of the cramp). I'm trying to like them a bit more - I'll let you know how I get on. How do you feel about your feet? Perhaps I'm just a freak.
Anyway, out of laziness I didn't change the channel at all on the television the other night and accidentally watched the Culture Show on Savion Glover. I've never been a tap-dancer but now feeling inspired and tempted to go solo to his show at Sadlers Wells in a couple of weeks. Come with?
